8 Interesting facts about GSLV MARK III

8 Interesting facts about GSLV MARK III

  1. GSLV MARK III was successfully launched on June 5th of 2017. It was a prominent step for the future programs of ISRO. It took 15 years to complete this project with a budget of 300 core.
  2. GSLV MARK 3 has one liquid and one solid propellant stage and a cryogenic stage.
  3. GSLV MARK 3 has a capacity to launch a payload with 4000 kg to a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbits of altitude 3600 km and It can place 8000 kg payload to low earth orbit of 600 km altitude.
  4. This will be an important step of ISRO towards their future plan to conduct a manned space mission. The rocket has a weight of 640 ton and 43.43-meter height.
  5. In the cryogenic stage (Third stage) of GSLV MARK 3, liquefied hydrogen is used as fuel and liquefied oxygen as the oxidizer. Fuel and oxidizer are stored in different tanks for space vehicles because fuel alone can't burn in space in the absence of oxygen.
  6. The fuel- oxygen mixture is burning in the combustion chamber. The first stage is a solid propellant stage and the second one is a liquid propellant stage.
  7. ISRO tested this GSLV MARK 3 in the Crew module Atmospheric Reentry Experiment(CARE) mission on December 18, 2014.
  8. Currently, ISRO is using European Union’s ARIANE rocket to launch heavy satellites into orbit.GSLV Mark 3 will use from 2017.

Interesting
facts about the three stages of GSLV MARK III
  • The first stage of the ignition is powered by the solid propellant Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene(ITPB).
  • Two hundred tons of propellant is burned for the ignition of the first stage engine “S200”. Simultaneously two booster rockets of GSLV Mark 3 located on either side of its liquid booster will ignite for 130 seconds.

  • In the second stage two Vikas Liquid Engine of L- 110 will work for 114 seconds after liftoff. The booster rockets will separate after 140 seconds from lift-off.
  • The liquid propellant used here is 110 tons of mono methane hydrosilane and nitrogen triiodide.
  • The third stage of GSLV Mark III  is a cryogenic stage. Here liquid hydrogen and oxygen are used as a propellant at a temperature of -252.87°C and -182.82°C respectively.
  • The CE-20 engine used in cryogenic stage and 25 tons of cryogenic fuel is burned during this stage.CE-20 is developed by the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre.
